A proper skincare regime helps get impurities under control on the outside but what we put into our bodies also plays a vital role in ensuring our skin is in tip-top shape. Here are our tips on the do's and don'ts surrounding feeding your skin from the inside.

DON'Ts

Blood-Sugar Level

Pimples blossom when foods that that raise your glucose level are consumed. Balancing your level of blood sugar with foods that naturally have a low glycemic index, i.e. non-processed food, counteracts the formation of these types of skin impurities. Sugar, refined grains, potatoes, crisps and the like should be avoided and, instead, add foods like complex carbohydrates (whole wheat bread, whole wheat rice, nuts, vegetables, etc.).

Dairy

Eliminating dairy from your diet may improve the texture of your skin and skin conditions such as acne. This is due to milk products, when combined with refined food and processed sugars, disrupt the insulin levels which can make the skin more prone to acne. A visible difference in skin texture and tone is noticeable not long after cancelling out this food group.

Alcohol & Nicotine

Alcohol and smoking dehydrate the skin which gives it a wrinkled and ashy appearance and have a negative impact on our overall health.

DOs

Tons of Greens

Chlorophyll found in green veggies supports the body in counteracting inflammation and curbs skin aging. The darker your greens, the better. Rucola, kale, spinach and watercress are fantastic options for creating delicious green smoothies, salads and more.

Clean Eating

The skin is the largest detoxifying organ. Skin impurities are a result of the body having to release too many toxins. It is wise to forego additives and other toxins and opt for a healthier, fresher and clean diet instead.

Replace Cow's Milk with Plant Milk

Milk products make the skin more prone to breakouts. Opting for plant-based milk such as oat milk provides the body with more vitamin E and folic acid.

Antioxidants & Nuts

Antioxidants fight inflammation and therefore skin impurities. Berries, red grapes, nettle as well as green veggies are packed with these free radical scavengers. Acne may also be a result of a zinc and selenium deficiency. Almonds, Brazil nuts and pumpkin seeds, to name a few, improves the imbalance and covers your daily vitamin E, zinc and magnesium requirements.

Hydration is Key

Keeping the body hydrated helps it to get rid of unwanted toxins. Vitamin-infused water, green tea or water with a few drops of lemon are only a few of the healthy options to up your water intake. Aim to consume up to 3 litres of water a day.
