What is rosacea and what causes it?

Rosacea is an inflammatory skin disease of the face that often occurs between the ages of 30 and 40. The typical redness often occurs on the centre of the face around the nose and cheeks. Those affected know that the inflamed regions of the face have an unpleasant feel.

The causes and possible effects of sudden redness and visible, irritated and enlarged blood vessels are unknown. Oftentimes, it is a genetic condition. However, it could also be a mix of various factors, such as diet.

There are different levels of severity that are distinguished by noticeable redness with dilated blood vessels and other changes in the skin, such as flakiness, swelling or pustules. Men, in particular, may be affected through a typical nodular change in the nose.

Oftentimes, one hears or reads that consuming coffee, tea or alcohol, spicy seasoning or direct sunlight can worsen the symptoms of rosacea. However, scientific studies are far and few between.

What may help lessen the burden is incorporating mild products with soothing and anti-inflammatory properties into your daily skincare routine. Yarrow, witch hazel, butcher's broom, calendula, chamomile or stinging nettle have soothing effects that may alleviate the symptoms.

A great example is mint. Mint has a pampering effect on impurities but might not be the best option for soothing redness.

  5. Sun protection: It is best to avoid direct sunlight and use a protective face oil.

DIY aloe vera remedy

  • Apply fresh gel from an aloe vera leaf directly onto reddened areas of the skin. The leaves are available in various organic shops and can be stored in the fridge for a few days.
  • Allow the skin to absorb the gel until it has dried then carefully rinse it with lukewarm water.
